Welcome!

Red's news...

Bucky Waters, of Deep Creek, recently played his career round of 81 at Honey Bee Golf Course.

Carl Stillman, of South Norfolk (Chesapeake) recently got a hole-in-one at Cahoon Plantation.

Congratulations!

June 27, 2007 -- I just visited the new course, Battlefield at Centerville, and it's starting to look pretty good out there. They've sprigged about a third of it, and it's already getting green! Things look good for a Labor Day opening!

I saw Mike Wall, the golf pro, working there, and it looked like he was getting most of the dirt on himself!

More soon!

Frank Lewis named 2007 Clubmaker of the Year

On the rustic roughs and cool, smooth greens of the world, one South Norfolk neighbor scored way above par for his craft when he was named 2007 Regional Professional Clubmaker of the Year by the Professional Clubmakers' Society (PCS).

Frank Lewis, (of Red's Golf, at Calloway and Bainbridge in South Norfolk), is one of the organization's best clubmakers, said Carol Huff, PCS Manager of Member Services.

"To be named 'Regional Professional Clubmaker of the Year' is a huge deal in our society," she said.

The international group has about 1,000 members worldwide and received eight highly in-depth applications (like doctorate theses, Huff said) for Professional Clubmaker of the Year. Lewis is one of only six regional clubmakers chosen for this year's award.

Frank's award
Frank Lewis has been named 2007 Regional Professional Clubmaker of the Year by the Professional Clubmakers' Society.

Lewis began his career as a young entrepreneur with an auto glass business in his Portsmith home, but moved the business and his family to South Norfolk (Chesapeake, VA) in 1974.

In 1997, Lewis' interest in golf led him to clubmaking. The more he learned, the more he spent on clubmaking equipment, classes and certifications. He attested to his passion for the craft in his application, stating "As you see, there is a (learning and equipment-buying) pattern here. There is truly a love for what I do."

These days, Lewis employs another technician for his Red's Auto Glass work so he can focus on clubmaking for Red's Golf. His wife, Judy, runs a framing service, also called Red's, near the front of the shop. All three businesses operate separately, but all share a single phone line, answered simply as "Red's."

Esteemed award notwithstanding, Lewis takes it all in stride. Somewhat reknowned locally for his easy-going manner, you'll have to stop by Red's to see his prizes: a certificate and the big sign promoting his award that is posted subtly, high on the swinging cage in his workshop. He'll tell you all about it.

And then, most likely, he'll want to get back to clubmaking, as the passion never stops for this "2007 Regional Professional Clubmaker of the Year."
