Fittings

Customers come into Frank's shop for a multitude of reasons. Some have been unhappy with "off the shelf" clubs, and others have been referred from a PGA professional they are currently working with. Others want to improve their overall game, or have spent a lot of money with little improvement in their games.

Whatever the reason, customers enjoy the individualized attention that they get during a custom fitting session with Frank.

The first part of the process involves discussing a summary of the overall process. While the customer fills out a PCS fitting form, Frank evaluates the equipment. He takes careful notes about the customer's current set, paying close attention to every detail which is noted on the PCS fitting form. The form provides valuable information about the player's game as well as what he/she is looking to achieve from the fitting session.

Next, Frank reviews the form while the customer warms up with a 6 iron in the hitting net. Customers usually don't notice the video camera taping the swings, and Frank doesn't point it out. He wants the performance to be as authentic as possible.

Later, Frank and the customer will review the video together, and Frank will explain what he sees in the tape. He will help determine if the customer's money is better spent on lessons or equipment, and will thoroughly discuss his recommendations for the customer.

If the customer decides to proceed, Frank begins the fitting process, which starts with the launch monitor. The customer will be asked to swing the 6 iron in the hitting net again. Frank watches from his monitor. He gathers real numbers at this time to determine if there are any equipment issues.

In time, the customer will view his/her swings in another monitor and will be able to see his/her immediate swinging results. Meanwhile, Frank will be watching to evaluate and compare the golfer's swing data.

Frank will discuss "club head speed" and "power transfer" physics, and the two will work together to help the customer's brain control the club face and not swing harder, and then they can move on to the next step: determining club length.

Frank begins with the measurement from wrist to floor to determine starting length, and then adjusts in half-inch increments until a position is found in which the customer's body seems to stay consistent.

Next, golfer and fitter move on to the shaft flex, determined generally from the clubhead speed. The customer swings a determinator approximately 10-15 times, and an average number will be gathered. From this, Frank decides whether to increase or decrease a flex in the shaft, as well as defining the tempo, transition and release style of the customer.

Using the outcomes from this series of evaluations, Frank creates a test club according to the specifications determined by the data collected from the customer. The customer swings the test club in the hitting net while viewing the launch monitor once again. In this session, if the customer and Frank are pleased with the outcome, the two can discuss club head designs, shafts and grips.

Frank builds another test club which the customer is to use for no less than three full rounds on the course. The customer will return and discuss his/her likes and dislikes of the club. If an adjustment is necessary, Frank will make adjustments until he and the customer are satisfied.

At that time, the customer will choose his/her clubs. If the customer chooses Frank's clubs, Frank builds two clubs based on the exact, predetermined specifications. Once again, the customer plays the test clubs and returns to Frank for any further adjustments.

(When customers choose to buy original manufactured equipment, Frank provides a written specification sheet so the information can be used in the order of his/her brand clubs).

Finally, when the customer is completely satisfied, the set is completed. If the customer requests it, Frank will even conduct a playing evaluation on the course. He and his customer will use the time to answer questions or discuss concerns. All his customers have his contact numbers, so they can call him any time anything comes up.

Yes, customers come into Red's for many reasons, but with one ultimate goal: to improve their golf games. And, with his state-of-the-art equipment, years of experience and training, Red's can help all golfers meet their goals.
